"Hays Prints Added To Boston Athenaeum Collection"
August, 2017

William Hays

Boston, Massachusetts, August 2017

Catharina Slautterback, Curator of Prints & Photographs at the Boston Athenaeum first saw William Hays' linocut prints in a gallery and took note. She then found out that a colleague had one of Hays' prints in his personal collection. Slautterback's work includes curation of a large regionalist collection of works of art on paper dating from the eighteenth century to the present. She is also in charge of acquiring contemporary work by New England artists, particularly works that document an artist's response to New England.

Hays received her email invitation to show his portfolio and arrangements were made for his visit to Boston. She says, "William's work appealed to me on many levels: technical proficiency, intriguing compositions and masterful use of color. His prints are often hauntingly beautiful, capturing not only the beauty of New England but also the human response to nature."

Slautterback and Hays spent about an hour reviewing more than 30 works and discussing the stories behind each print as well as techniques used to create his work. After some additional time alone with the prints, she chose seventeen works to add to the collection.

Hays says, "The Boston Athenaeum is a literal treasure house of U.S. and New England history." While visiting he had the opportunity to spend some time enjoying the sculpture, paintings, drawings and prints on display as well as admiring the enormous library. He continues, "Having my linocut prints selected for such a venerable collection is a great honor and confirmation for me."

The Boston Athenaeum is located at 10 Beacon Street and is open to the public Tuesday through Saturday. Membership is open to all. For more information visit www.bostonathenaeum.org
